Planning permission has been granted for new toilets to be built in a seaside car park as part of wider plans by the district council.

The existing free lavatories, in Foxholes car park in Exmouth, will be demolished.

Permission has been granted for six unisex lavatories, two accessible lavatories and a changing space to be built.

There would also be external showers, a bike rack and seating installed nearby.

The look of the plans had a mixed response from councillors

Beachgoers would have to pay 40p to use the new toilets and have to pay using a contactless payment by card or phone, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Brian Bailey, Conservative Councillor for Exmouth Littleham, said he could "absolutely see the need for these toilets to be refurbished," but couldn't see the need for demolition.

He added that he believed Exmouth deserved a better design.

Nick Hookway, Lib Dem Councillor for Exmouth Littleham, said: “The proposed design in my view is fresh and modern and will be a refreshing change."
