A man has been seriously injured in a stabbing in Newcastle city centre.
The victim, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital following the attack which took place at about 02:10 GMT on Friday in Grainger Street.
Northumbria Police arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Officers remain at the scene and a cordon has been put in place at High Bridge in the Bigg Market.
Officers believe those involved are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Emergency services attended the scene and found a man with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.
"The man – in his 20s – was taken to hospital for treatment and remains there in a stable condition."
Detectives have appealed for information.
