A fire service has urged people to take rubbish home and avoid barbecues after a discarded glass bottle was found at the centre of a wildfire at a Leeds beauty spot.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Otley Chevin near Surprise View on Thursday at 23:54 BST, and it covered an area 165ft (50m) wide.

Leeds North West MP Katie White said it was a "stark reminder" of the importance of taking care during the hot weather.

She said: "Thankfully all under control and no one was injured, but a stark reminder of the importance of taking care in this heat in green spaces which can become very dry, leaving nothing behind and adhering to any guidelines on use of BBQs."

According to West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, crews from Otley, Rawdon and Shipley tackled the blaze using about 30,000 litres of water.

A spokesperson said: "The cause of a fire like this can be hard to determine, but the most likely cause is this discarded glass bottle found at the centre of the fire.

"Enjoy our fantastic green spaces and the amazing weather, but please do not have fires and BBQs where prohibited and take your rubbish home."
