Police are appealing for witnesses to a "tragic" incident in which a driver was hit by his own car and fatally injured.

It happened at about 12:15 GMT on 12 December on Mill Lane, Mobberley, Knutsford, Cheshire Police said.

Officers believe the 80-year-old man had just got out of his silver Kia Sportage.

He died later in hospital. His passenger, an 80-year-old woman who was also hit, remains in hospital with serious injuries.

The force said it was trying to find out the full circumstances of what had happened.

It appealed for witnesses and anyone in the area with "anything relevant" on CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.

Insp Steve Griffiths said: "This is a tragic incident that has happened so close to Christmas.

"It is vital we can piece together the events of last week to establish exactly what happened."
