Calls to improve mobile phone coverage
- Published
Calls have been made for action from government and phone companies to tackle poor mobile coverage.
Jeremy Hunt, Godalming and Ash MP, said he has made the issue a priority after hearing about the frustrations of residents and businesses.
Waverley Borough Council (WBC) has written a letter to the minister of state for Data and Digital Infrastructure asking for more support to improve services.
The government said it is working with Ofcom to "have a greater understanding" of people's experiences using mobile networks.
Liz Townsend, WBC portfolio holder for planning and economic development, said there is concern that rural areas are being neglected as new digital technology is introduced.
"It's a constant issue and people need mobile connection," she told BBC Radio Surrey.
"It's the fourth utility now. They need to be able to use it for, say, paying for their parking in the local car parks. You often see people wandering around searching for a mobile signal."
Jeremy Hunt said he has spoken to the minister responsible, Chris Bryant, and has invited him to come to the village of Cranleigh.
He said: "I'm hoping he'll do that sometimes this year.
"The government has a role too because they set the regulations under which the mobile operators work and so I would like to see more pressure from the government to get this sorted out."
Mobile UK, the trade association, said 5G is "being rolled out rapidly" across the UK with a £2bn investment in network upgrades.
'Access is critical'
A Department for Science, Innovation and Technology spokesperson said: "Access to fast and reliable mobile and broadband coverage is critical to deliver the change our country needs to thrive, from boosting economic growth and supporting British businesses, to improving everyday public services.
"That is why we are working with Ofcom to improve coverage reporting, so we have a greater understanding of the lived experiences of consumers using mobile networks in popular rural areas such as Waverley."
