More women and girls will be encouraged to consider careers in engineering at an event to be held in Hull.

Organisers of the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) event said that despite high demand for people with STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) qualifications, women were underrepresented in these roles.

In the Humber region, manufacturing contributes to 17% of employment, compared to about 9% nationally, a spokesperson said.

Dr Kirsty Clode, chair of WiME, said the event at the Guildhall on 9 October would showcase what opportunities were available, while dispelling misconceptions.

“There are a wealth of rewarding roles calling for innovation, problem-solving, adaptability and collaboration – all of which women are great at," she said.

'Fantastic starting point'

Former science teacher Carrie Grimbleby, who studied for a masters degree in renewable energy, came across Green Port Hull’s WiME initiative while searching for a job.

Green Port Hull is a collaboration between Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Associated British Ports (ABP) to promote investment and development of the renewable energy sector in the Humber region.

Ms Grimbleby said it helped her secure her first role in the industry with ABP.

“I was introduced to women from companies such as ABP, Siemens Gamesa and more, where I chatted to them about graduate opportunities," she said.

“It was great to discover their career paths, particularly those who had recently had a change of career, something people shouldn’t be afraid of.

“I want women and girls to know it is possible to have a career in manufacturing, engineering or renewable energy, regardless of their age.

“WiME is a fantastic starting point and I urge people to visit the careers event and find out more," she added.

The free event, which involves more than 30 of the region's employers, takes place at Hull Guildhall between 16:30 and 18:00 BST on Wednesday 9 October.
