A burst water main closed a major road and blocked motorway access in Barnsley.

The A628 Dodworth Road between Shaw Lane and Horizon Community College was shut after the leak was reported at about 08:00 BST, with the flooding also preventing access to the M1.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said the burst affected supply to a number of properties in the S70 and S75 postcode areas.

In an update at 15:15 BST, the company said the leak had been fixed and water had been restored to the affected homes.

The spokesperson added: "We apologise again for the disruption and appreciate everyone's patience while we carried out the necessary repairs."

South Yorkshire Police had earlier said the A628 was partially reopened in both directions, with sandbags used to help protect some nearby homes from the water.
