A man has died in hospital following a serious crash on the M20 near Maidstone, Kent Police has said.

At around 23:30 GMT on Wednesday, a grey Volkswagen Polo was reportedly travelling against the flow of traffic on the coastbound carriageway between junctions eight and nine of the motorway.

Shortly afterwards a crash took place involving the car and a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, police said.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was airlifted to a London hospital where he died on Thursday. His next of kin have been informed.

The other motorist has been discharged after being treated at hospital for minor injuries, said the force.

An investigation by Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit is under way, with witnesses urged to come forward.
