A leisure centre and library where legionella bacteria were found could have to close permanently because a council does not think it can afford the necessary repairs.

Woolston Neighbourhood Hub, which includes a swimming pool, leisure facilities, library, GP surgery and community organisations, is currently shut because of structural concerns alongside the presence of bacteria.

Warrington Borough Council (WBC) estimated the repairs would cost about £3m, meaning the unit's permanent closure is "one of the options" on the table.

A public consultation will run until 2 January.

'Difficult decisions'

The centre has been partially closed since July and fully shut since September.

Legionalla remains at the site "despite comprehensive flushing and disinfection", said WBC.

The local authority said the hub had been subsidised for "some time" and was not "financially sustainable as it stands".

Deputy leader Jean Flaherty said: "The budget pressures we are facing are more significant than ever, and we must be realistic about which services we can afford to provide in the future.

"Unfortunately, this is just one of many difficult decisions we anticipate having to take across the council as we grapple with our current financial situation."

WBC added all options were "currently on the table" and asked leisure centre members and local residents to take part in the public consultation.

Earlier this year, WBC proposed closing one of its libraries before making a U-turn following a public backlash and a protest from local schoolchildren.
