Ireland's Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Simon Harris has described threats against his family as "cowardice".

The threat was posted on social media on Sunday morning, RTÉ has reported.

"As a father, I have very strong views and feelings on this as you can imagine. As a political leader, I find it unacceptable in every way," he said in a statement.

An Garda Síochána (Irish police service) has confirmed it is investigating.

The Fine Gael leader's statement continued: "Let me be clear: threatening people - any person - is a crime.

"Threatening children is despicable. It is cowardice and it is a line that no decent society should tolerate being crossed."

Writing on social media, Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin said he "unreservedly" condemned the "abhorrent threats" made against Harris and his family.

"Such threats to people in public life are unacceptable. They are a fundamental threat to our democracy," Martin added.

In August 2024 a man was arrested over online threats made against Harris.

It followed a bomb threat made against the Fine Gael leader's home and a threat, mentioning knives, which was made on Instagram.
