Applications for the applied social science degree open next month

A new undergraduate degree in applied social science has been added to the range of courses students can study on the Isle of Man.

The new addition at University College Isle of Man (UCM) offers the opportunity to specialise in psychology, criminology or sociology.

Applications open next month for the three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc), which lends itself to jobs in police, social work, teaching, and human resources.

Higher education manager Gail Corrin said the degree combined elements from the various disciplines, with the opportunity for work placements on the island.

In the 2022-23 academic year there were 64 Manx students studying psychology, sociology, criminology and related subjects in the United Kingdom and the college was "keen to provide an option for these students without having to leave the island", she said.

For those already in the sectors, some modules would be available for individual professional development.

The island's higher education facilitator is set to hold an open evening next month to highlight the course available on the island, and the job opportunities the qualifications lend themselves to.

That event takes place on 14 November between 16:00 to 19:00 GMT on its Homefield Road campus in Douglas.
