Northern says heavy rain has caused "major delays"

  • Published

Rail passengers in Cumbria have been facing further flooding disruption, days after Storm Lilian forced the cancellation of several services.

Northern said trains running between Carlisle and Lancaster, via Barrow, would be "cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or suspended" for the remainder of the day and advised people not to travel.

Replacement buses would not be provided "due to a lack of available operators in the Cumbrian region", the firm added.

The first services affected were the 13:07 BST Carlisle to Lancaster train, which was forced to terminate at Workington, and the 13:19 BST Lancaster to Carlisle train, which went no further than Barrow.

The line had been hit by Storm Lilian on Friday, with heavy flooding blocking the route between Workington and Whitehaven.

Sunday then saw further cancellations as Northern ran what it called "an extremely reduced service" due to staffing issues.
