The company behind plans for a new tissue paper mill in East Yorkshire has begun a three-week public consultation.

The "state of the art" factory in Goole will create more than 400 jobs and thousands more in the supply chain, according to Metsä Tissue.

The project, announced in September 2023, aims to reduce tissue imports into the UK by 30%.

A public exhibition will take place on 21 March at the RaisE Business Centre on Tom Pudding Way between 15:00 GMT and 19:30.

The plans will also be made available online.

Wood fibres from Nordic forests

Alan Jeffery, the company's technical director said: "We’ve been busy developing the designs for the site and are excited to share more of those details with the local community.

"The public exhibition is an important step in this process."

The factory is expected to be built in phases over the next decade.

When completed, it will have a capacity to produce 240,000 tonnes of tissue paper using fresh wood fibres grown in Nordic forests, according to Metsä, which is headquartered in Finland.

The UK Prime Minister previously described the investment as "good for Yorkshire, good for our economy and good for sustainability".

The consultation will close on 5 April.
