A man in his 20s is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash involving an off-road bike.

Merseyside Police said a red bike hit a lamp-post on Washington Parade in Bootle at about 18:25 BST on Friday.

After the crash, the rider is said to have put the bike into the back of a silver Iveco van which was driven away.

He then entered a house on Pembroke Road and went to hospital a short time later, a force spokesman said.

Witness appeal

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Sgt Martin Mayne said: "If you saw the bike travelling in the area shortly before, or the van leaving the scene, please get in touch and help us piece together exactly what happened."
