Motorists have been warned about a spike in the number of thefts from vehicles in Peterborough.

Cambridgeshire Police said there had been 66 reports of thefts since 1 June, with money, tools, sunglasses and passports among the stolen items.

Entry was gained into at least 10 vehicles through smashed windows, at least 22 vehicles were left unlocked, and at least two had windows left open.

Insp Jo Grant said the increase was concerning for the community but officers were "working hard to identify those responsible" and had made two arrests.

A man has been charged with two counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order by interfering with a vehicle, theft from a vehicle and burglary including theft of a bicycle.

Another man was arrested and bailed in connection with vehicle interference in Bettles Close, Dogsthorpe, on 6 July.

Insp Grant said: “I would encourage anyone with video doorbells or CCTV to check footage for any offences and report it to us, even if it only looks like an attempt to enter a vehicle.

"Precautions can be taken to deter thieves such as ensuring doors are locked and windows are closed when leaving the vehicle, even momentarily, and also removing any items from inside.”
