Several streets in the centre of Glasgow have been closed after stonework fell from a dangerous building.

Glasgow City Council said the material fell onto the pavement on Queen Street at about 03:00 on Friday morning.

The busy shopping street was closed to traffic at 08:00 and a crane was brought in to access the roof of the building.

Parts of Argyle Street, Union Street, Ingram Street, Mitchell Street and Mitchell Lane in the city centre were also closed.

The fallen material is believed to have come from the baluster part of a stone railing on the roof.

Glasgow City Council said work was ongoing to "ensure public safety" on the street.

A spokesperson said: "Our building standards officers have deployed a crane to support the removal of any further loose stonework from the roof.

"Queen Street is currently closed to traffic to accommodate the crane and drivers are advised to seek an alternative route at this time."
