Reis Treby claimed he did not mean to stab a police officer but admitted to GBH without intent

A man who stabbed a police officer with a kitchen knife during an arrest has been jailed.

Reis Treby, 26, of Colville Road, Cambridge, was stopped as he rode a bicycle in Headly Street in the city on 19 March, after officers recognised him as having known links to drugs.

During the arrest, one officer was stabbed in the arm and had to be treated for a deep laceration.

Treby admitted possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, possession of criminal property and possession with intent to supply cannabis and was jailed for six years and four months at Peterborough Crown Court on Wednesday.

During the arrest, officers found more than £650 in cash and cannabis on Treby and the kitchen knife was found discarded nearby.

In an interview, Treby admitted all charges put to him but told police he was removing the knife from his waistband as he was concerned he was going to be "accidentally stabbed" in the process of being arrested.

He said he had "no intention" of causing injuries to any police officers.

Det Con Lee Steeden, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every single day. They were simply doing their jobs, patrolling the streets, tackling crime, and protecting the public.

"Treby claimed he had no intention of hurting a police officer.

"The idea that carrying a knife provides protection is a dangerous misconception, which, as demonstrated in this case, brings more harm than security."
