A series of closures are planned on a major road with drainage works expected to last longer than a year.

The work on la Grande Route de St John to Sion, Jersey, was due to start in November and finish in February 2027.

The Government of Jersey said staged full road closures were planned for the work between the St Helier Municipal Services Depot, north of Mont à l'Abbé School, to Sion.

It said the sewerage network under La Grande Route de St Jean was "already operating at full capacity" and "must evolve to cope".

The sewers in the centre of the road would be replaced with larger ones, said the government.

Officials said the upgrade should protect homes, businesses, the environment, reduce flood risk and support new housing development.

They said properties on either side of the road would be reconnected to the new sewers.

Two contractors would be carrying out the work which has been split into 10 areas, said the government.

A series of drop-in sessions for people to find out more were planned.
