An animal rights organisation has offered a reward for information following an incident in which a cat was shot.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed that the shooting took place overnight between Saturday 17 August and Sunday 18 August at Cropton, near Pickering.

The cat required urgent veterinary treatment but is now recovering, and pellets from shotgun cartridges were found in its body.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have pledged £3,000 to anyone with information about the incident that might lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

PETA vice-president Elisa Allen said: “It’s imperative that any community faced with cruel and callous acts such as this take measures to find the culprit and bring them to justice.

“Animal abusers are a danger to everyone; they take their issues out on whomever is available to them – humans or other animals – and must be caught before they act again," she added.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed that no arrests have been made.
