Several people had to jump out of the way to avoid a car which had rammed an unmarked police car before entering a pedestrianised high street, Sussex Police has said.
The grey Kia hit an unmarked blue BMW in Surrey Street, Littlehampton, at about 10:15 GMT before "speeding away" through a pedestrian crossing and entering the steet, the force said.
"Families were present at the time, and several people had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck," a spokesperson added.
The force is urging witnesses, including anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area at the time to get in touch.
