Ethan Aherne resigned from the force in December 2022 after 15 months’ service

A former West Mercia Police officer caught playing rugby while claiming he was unable to work would have been sacked had he not already resigned, the force said.

A misconduct hearing found that Ethan Aherne, 28, had breached the standards of professional behaviour in relation to discreditable conduct and honesty and integrity.

Aherne resigned from the force in December 2022 and was later convicted in September 2023 for fraud by false representation.

The hearing was chaired by temporary Chief Constable Alex Murray, who labelled his former officer's actions as "totally immoral".
