A former nurse is preparing to ride solo along the Atlantic coast in the United States to raise money for charity.

Bob Colclough from Leigh, Staffordshire is cycling 1,500 miles from Boston to Miami for Guide Dogs, and has given himself around 24 days to cover the distance.

He will turn 68 during the ride next month, and began long distance cycling in 2004, after a friend suggested riding from Land's End to John O' Groats.

Mr Colclough said the latest challenge is a way of raising money, seeing the world and keeping fit.

He and his partner have adopted two retired guide dogs, and he said the charity had "really got to his heart and needs the money".

Mr Colclough has previously ridden solo across Australia for charity and completed coast-to-coast cycles across the US, and says it will be good to get back on the road.

"The USA is one of my favourite places to cycle," he said. "The countryside, the people, it's a cracking place to go to."

His latest big ride begins in Boston on Sunday.
