Woodbridge could see several changes introduced as part of a travel project

A county council is considering introducing more 20mph speed limits in a town as part of a travel project.

Suffolk County Council is looking at ways to make walking and cycling journeys in Woodbridge more convenient.

Between February and April a public engagement scheme ran which saw over 3,500 pieces of written feedback.

Alexander Nicoll, deputy cabinet member for transport strategy, said residents' feedback would be reflected in the proposals.

"The Active Travel team has analysed each piece of feedback carefully," he said.

"This thorough review has led to amendments in the proposals that reflect the views and suggestions of residents and businesses.

"These adjustments ensure that while the core objectives of the project - making walking, wheeling and cycling trips easier, safer, and more convenient - are achieved, the needs and concerns of our community are properly understood and addressed."

The county council said changes to several areas would include:

• Emphasis on traffic survey work to investigate the possibility of more 20mph speed limits

• Traffic calming measures instead of modal filters, like bollards

• Upgraded and additional crossings

• More improvements to footpaths

More than £5m of funding from the government's Active Travel England scheme was secured in 2023 to make improvements to Woodbridge.

Mr Nicoll said the council would continue to develop and deliver the improvements with the local community "to enable more choice for people travelling in Woodbridge".
