A hit-and-run driver who seriously injured a pedestrian after racing through a red light has been jailed for more than three years.

Jake Syron, 32, was driving at about twice the 20mph speed limit in his Land Rover Evoque when he struck Michael Alderson as he crossed Middleton Road in Morley on 21 October 2023.

Syron, Denshaw Grove, Morley, fled the scene, leaving Mr Alderson, 35, lying in the road with life-threatening injuries, West Yorkshire Police said.

He was sentenced to three years and three months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and disqualified from driving for four years and seven months.

The force said shortly before the collision Syron had overtaken another car waiting at the red light and was driving on the wrong side of the road.

PC Zac Hinchliffe said Syron "clearly felt the rules of the road didn't apply to him".

"His actions that night have had life-changing consequences," he said.

"The victim had to undergo multiple surgeries and still suffers from his injuries."

Syron was also told he must take an extended driving test should he wish to drive again.
