Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man was found in a park.

The man, aged 54, was discovered in a grassy area near Shipcote Lane, Gateshead, at 06:10 BST on Sunday, Northumbria Police said, with injuries relating to a suspected assault.

Two men, aged 33 and 39, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

Det Insp Chris Deavin has urged anyone with any information "however insignificant you feel it may be" to get in touch with the force.

He added that a "significant number of enquiries were ongoing".

"Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this terrible time, and we will use every tactic available to us to ensure effective justice is brought against anybody found to be involved," he said.
