A new Christmas lights trail is set to illuminate Derby city centre during the festive season.

The Festive Derby Light Trail will include installations across the city centre, stretching from The Spot, in Lara Croft Way, all the way down to Cathedral Square.

Derby City Council said the trail will "wind its way through the heart of the city" and include the UK’s largest light-up Santa installation, which will be located in the Market Place.

Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, said: "We’re already getting excited about this Christmas in Derby."

"The new light trail promises to be a magical addition to our packed festive programme," she added

'Explore the city'

Derby City Council, the Cathedral Quarter and St Peter’s Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) have teamed up to create the new attraction.

The trail starts with festive wrapped rings at The Spot, leading to a lit-up Rudolph arch at St Peter's Cross, which links to a tunnel of light running through Cornmarket.

"Colourfully lit" Christmas presents will sit alongside a Christmas tree inside the Market Place, where the "highlight of the trail" - the UK’s largest light-up Santa - can be found.

"A curtain of light" will then illuminate Irongate up to Cathedral Square, where a large gold star will sit below the cathedral.

Brad Worley, manager for Cathedral Quarter and St Peter’s Quarter Derby BIDs, said: "The BIDs are thrilled to bring this amazing light installation trail to the city.

"We want people to explore the city and experience what our wonderful businesses have to offer this festive period."

Festive Derby will officially launch the trail with a Christmas Lights Switch-On event on 30 November.
