Plans would see 25 affordable homes built in Kendal

A council is set to sell a piece of land for 25 "desperately needed" affordable homes.

Westmorland and Furness Council's cabinet agreed to sell land at High Sparrowmire in Kendal, Cumbria to social housing provider South Lakes Housing.

The company was given permission in 2020 to build nine homes for social rent and 16 for shared ownership, a government scheme for people struggling to get a mortgage.

Housing councillor Judith Derbyshire said it had "taken a while" for the plans to come to fruition, but she was "glad to see" them move forward.

"We desperately need affordable housing," she added.

A report prepared for the cabinet said Kendal's housing market was "under pressure" because of second homes owners and holiday lets, having "serious consequences" on small rural communities, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
