Deputies vote against compulsory language GCSEs

The number of students in Jersey taking language GCSEs fell 10% between 2018 and 2022

Politicians in Jersey have rejected plans to make learning a language other than English compulsory at GCSE.
It means studying language GCSEs will remain optional for students.
Deputy Montfort Tadier had proposed making language GCSEs compulsory in 2023 after figures revealed the number of pupils taking them had fallen 10% within three years.
Deputies voted to keep language GCSEs optional by a margin of 24 to 20.
