George Galloway has said the Workers Party of Britain is about more than Gaza during a visit to Birmingham.

Mr Galloway was in Sparkbrook to endorse independent and Workers Party candidates across the city standing on the issue of Gaza.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: “We’re not single issue, but if we were, Gaza is the mother of all single issues.”

The party believes it can attract votes in the West Midlands, after witnessing the success of third-placed independent candidate Akhmed Yakoob in the Mayoral election.

'Kicking backsides'

Some in the Labour Party in Birmingham are concerned that Workers Party candidates and independents endorsed by the party could eat into their vote, particularly in areas with large Muslim populations.

Asked during Monday's visit why he was targeting voters in the West Midlands, Mr Galloway said: “The two main parties are two cheeks of the same backside and they want to give it a kick.

“We are the vehicle, us and our independent allies, to deliver that message.

“I’m quite good at kicking backsides and I look forward to doing it here as elsewhere.”

A full list of general election candidates in each constituency will be published on the BBC News website after nominations close on Friday.
