Leisure centre refurbishment delayed as costs rise

Work to refurbish The Dome was set to begin this year

A leisure centre refurbishment has been postponed after it was revealed the project would cost £11.4m more than estimated.

Works to improve The Dome in Doncaster were to begin this year but have been postponed until early 2025, with the expected completion date pushed back to early 2026.

Doncaster Council originally estimated the project would cost £14.4m and was approved by councillors as part of the city's capital budget in February. It will now expected to cost £25.8m.

The Lagoons swimming area and its entrance will be closed while work to improve it takes place but the rest of the site will remain open.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, mechanical and building updates will also be made across the site.

Since it opened in 1989, The Dome has been the largest contributor of funding to Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust, which maintains facilities across the borough.
