A gold-medal-winning trampolinist has been chosen to be a flagbearer at the Olympics’ closing ceremony in Paris.

Bryony Page, from Crewe, won Great Britain's first trampoline Olympic gold earlier this month.

Ms Page and Alex Yee, a triathlete who also won a gold medal in the Paris games, have been named as Team GB’s two flagbearers for the closing ceremony this evening.

“When I got the call to tell me, I couldn't believe it - it truly is such an honour,” Ms Page said in a statement.

“For a sport like trampolining, which is quite niche, it's quite amazing - and to be able to hold the flag for all of the Team GB Olympians here is incredible.”

The Paris Olympics’ closing ceremony will take place at the Stade de France from 20:00 BST, concluding 16 days that have seen Team GB win 65 medals.

The winners have included a number of athletes from the West Midlands, such as cyclist Sophie Capewell, from Lichfield in Staffordshire, who won a gold medal along with her two team-mates in the women’s team sprint.

Other medallists from the West Midlands include Wolverhampton’s Matt Hudson-Smith, who won silver in the men’s 400m race, and Rugby’s Kimberley Wood, who won bronze in the women’s kayak single.

Swimmer Adam Peaty and cyclist Dan Bigham, both from Staffordshire, also won silver medals.
