AI crossing to be installed near football ground
- Published
A new crossing which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect people approaching is to be installed on a road near a football ground.
The Toucan crossing on Oteley Road in Shrewsbury will be the first in Shropshire to use AI detection, the council said.
The system can detect cyclists and pedestrians approaching from about 20 to 30 metres away and can enable the lights on the crossing to change more quickly, it added.
It was being installed after police raised concerns around the safety of people leaving football matches at Shrewsbury Town's Croud Meadow stadium.
Toucan crossings allow both cyclists and pedestrians to cross and show both a green cycle symbol and a green man.
Work on the scheme will be carried out from 28 October to 22 November with two-way temporary traffic lights set to be in place.
