Jersey charity staff and volunteers were given free relaxation therapy at Highlands College.

The school’s Hair and Beauty Department provided treatments for Macmillan Jersey to reduce stress as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

The treatments were designed to celebrate staff and volunteers’ work in the community and give them a chance to focus on their own mental wellbeing as well.

The independent charity offers free emotional, practical and wellbeing support to people in the island affected by cancer.

Chief Executive Officer of Macmillan Jersey, Steph Gibaut, said the treatments were amazing

Steph Gibaut from Macmillan Jersey was given some of the treatments by students at Highlands College.

She said it was “something quite incredible” to see staff and volunteers supported like this.

“As a charity, we often talk about financial support but to be offered a different kind of support is really quite something and we’ve been blown away by the students,” she said.

Ms Gibaut added the treatments had been “the talk of the charity centre” and “everybody has absolutely loved it”.

Kayleigh Goggin, beauty therapy lecturer at Highlands College, said students were keen to show their gratitude to the charity

Kayleigh Goggin, beauty therapy lecturer at Highlands College, helped organise the therapy sessions.

She said Macmillan Jersey does “amazing work in the island” and that “they need support as well to look after themselves”.

“It’s been really beneficial for our learners as they feel part of the community and we want to encourage that connectivity," she said.

“We have never offered relaxation therapy like this before for a charity,” she said but added there had now been discussions about doing something similar with other charities as well.
