A man suffered multiple injuries when burglars broke into his home while he slept, police said.

Essex Police said the break-in - being treated as an aggravated burglary - happened in Basildon between 22:00 BST on Friday and 01:00 BST on Saturday.

"The occupant of a property in Cherrydown West reported being awoken after the front door was forced open and three men entered the property," said the force in a statement.

"The victim, a man in his 30s, sustained multiple injuries that required hospital treatment," it added.

Officers have appealed to anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage taken at the time of the incident to get into touch.
