A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager was shot on an industrial estate.

Ellis Cox was 19 when he was killed in Aintree, Merseyside, on 23 June 2024 as he walked home from a day out with friends.

Merseyside Police said a 32-year-old man from the Croxteth area of Liverpool had been arrested on suspicion of murder and possession of a firearm.

The suspect is the fifth person arrested as part of the force's investigation into Mr Cox's death. No charges have been brought.

Ellis Cox's mother Carolyn sits on a sofa with Det Ch Insp Steve McGrath to her right and and Julie O'Toole to her left. They are all looking at the camera. Carolyn has long blonde hair and Julie has mid-length red hair. Both are wearing black hoodies with the writing "Who murdered Ellis Cox?" and a picture of Ellis. Det Ch Insp Steve McGrath is wearing a dark suit with a blue shirt and a navy blue tie with thin red stripes.

Detectives believe Mr Cox was shot with a self-loading pistol as he walked through the Liver Industrial Estate, having travelled back from Southport.

His mother, Carolyn Cox, has previously said he had called her shortly before and told her he would be "home in five minutes".

He was found with gunshot wounds at 22:00 BST.

In a statement released on the first anniversary of his death, his family said: "It's difficult for us to explain the indescribable pain we are going through each day, knowing we don't get to hug him.

"Nothing feels the same without him, and our family is just so lost and broken.

"We will never stop fighting for the truth for Ellis."

Det Insp Steve Wilkinson said: "I want to thank the community so far for the information they have provided to us and assure them that we are determined to get justice for Ellis's family.

"We're continuing to appeal for any information from anyone who is yet to come forward, the smallest detail of which could be vital to our inquiries."
