Police launched a murder investigation into the death of a man in his 20s on Thursday

A man found dead in Northampton on Wednesday had suffered a fatal stab wound, a post-mortem examination has found.

Police launched a murder investigation after the fatal assault in Flaxwell Court, Little Billing.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three men, aged 22, 23, and 25, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder and remained in police custody.

Detectives have been granted an extension by Northampton Magistrates' Court, allowing them to continue questioning the suspects for an extra 24 hours.

Emergency services were called to the property at about 17:40 GMT following reports a man in his 20s had been assaulted.

The post-mortem examination was held at Leicester Royal Infirmary on Thursday and showed the preliminary cause of death to be a stab wound.

Det Ch Insp Johnny Campbell said: "The death has understandably also had a huge impact on the neighbourhood and wider community, and we would like to thank them for their support.

"Over the coming days, our neighbourhood policing team will remain in the area and anyone with any concerns, whether connected to this incident or not, is encouraged to speak to them as they will be happy to help."
