Demolition of a fire-damaged pub and hotel previously targeted by vandals has begun.

The Chilton Country Pub and Hotel in Chilton Moor, near Houghton-Le-Spring, closed in 2022 and has sat derelict since and was further damaged by a fire.

Durham County Council leader Andrew Husband said the building's condition has caused safety concerns and a long-term road closure.

"By clearing the site, we will be able to open up opportunities for the site to be redeveloped for the benefit of the community," he said.

"Due to the extent of the damage, the site has been accessible to the public which has led to vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

"We have been seeking ways to make the site secure without success."

The Reform UK-led authority is funding the works through its Towns and Villages Vulnerable Buildings Project, which aims to bring vacant units back into use through reuse, enforcement or, if necessary, demolition.

Council contractors will be on site over the coming weeks to complete the demolition works.
