Drivers in Sefton have been warned of a new text message-based scam linked to a "copycat" council website.

Sefton Council said motorists were being targeted by text messages requesting payments for unpaid parking fines and linking to a website said to have been styled on like the council's secure web portal.

Some residents have been getting text messages on their smartphones, fraudulently requesting online payments to settle parking notices, the authority warned.

"Sefton Council does not use text messaging to recover unpaid parking charges," the council said.

A council spokesperson said the text messages included a link to a webpage where drivers were asked to submit their financial information and confirm payment.

The money and personal information was then believed to be taken by the fraudsters.

"Please check carefully before paying a parking charge and if you're unsure please email us to check at Parkingcc@sefton.gov.uk," a council spokesperson added.
