Eight arrests in attempted murder investigation

Eight people have been arrested after an attack which left two people in their 60s with serious injuries.

Police were called to a property on Durham Street in Elswick, Newcastle, at about 18:45 GMT on Friday after a man and woman had been assaulted.

Both were taken to hospital, where the woman remains in a critical condition with a head injury and the man in a stable condition.

Northumbria Police initially arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of attempted murder, but has now arrested seven others on a range of charges.

Four men – two in their 20s, one in his 30s, and another in his 40s – have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

Another two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All eight suspects remain in police custody.

Det Ch Insp Mark Atherton said a cordon would remain in place around the scene for some time.

"I would also like to remind the public that this remains a live investigation and to avoid any speculation – both online and in the community," he said.

"We have zero tolerance for violence, and we will do all we can to get answers for the loved ones of both victims."

The force has asked anyone with information to come forward and is interested to hear from anyone with information about a stolen car.

The red Renault Twingo was believed to have been parked in the West End of Newcastle between 18:30 and 20:00 GMT on Friday before it was found in Longbenton on Saturday morning.
