Dan Shaw says he found parts of the submarine during low tide

A man has found parts of a submarine wreck following a four-year search.

Dan Shaw, 39, said it took "multiple attempts" before the tide was low enough to find the wreckage under cliffs at Buckton, between Speeton and Bempton, in East Yorkshire.

After a "crazy coastal climb" with a friend on 21 September, Mr Shaw said he caught sight of parts of the submarine including the hatch door.

The wreckage is said to come from H.M. Submarine G3, which survived World War One but was lost during a storm in November 1921 as it was being taken away for scrap.

Mr Shaw, from Bridlington, said his interest in the submarine was piqued in 2020 when he stumbled across an old photograph.

He said: "As locals, we wanted to find it as it's part of history.

"After a gruelling trek under the cliffs and rock-climbing, we eventually stumbled across it and what an amazing feeling inside seeing it with our own eyes."

Mr Shaw said he had to wait years for the tide to be lower than 13ft (4m), which was needed to see parts of the wreckage.

According to Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre (SMHC), valuable parts of the wreckage were salvaged by an insurance company, with the remainder blown up in 1940 as it was found it could have been used as a landmark for invaders in World War Two.
