Theatre still at risk of closure

A theatre is still under threat of closure, despite efforts to save it – including by celebrity Russell Brand.
Thameside Theatre in Grays, Essex, is one of 44 UK venues named on the Theatres Trust's at-risk list for 2025.
Thurrock Council previously considered selling the complex after running up £1.5bn of debt, but reconsidered following a campaign from the local community.
The council said it was "continuing to explore" the future of the theatre and hoped to make a decision "very soon".
The council has been operating the theatre since it opened in 1971, but has struggled with ongoing financial difficulties.
In 2023, actor/comedian Brand wrote to the government pleading for help to save his childhood theatre.
Protests against Thameside's closure prompted the council to delay a final decision about its disposal.
The Theatres Trust, a national charity supporting and advising theatres, said two local groups had submitted proposals to take over operation of the venue, but neither had been taken forward.
It said the council confirmed in November that it had no immediate plans to dispose of the theatre, but "since the venue appears to be operating at a loss, the theatre remains at risk".
A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said: "We know how important the library, museum and theatre are to Thurrock residents. The theatre is open and has a full line-up of shows including plays, musicals, variety and comedy.
"We're continuing to explore, with local people, how we can ensure the long-term future of the complex and the Thameside Theatre and hope to make a decision very soon."
The Theatres Trust said many of the venues on its risk register were "of significant historical and cultural importance and could remain valuable community spaces if given the right support".
