Pedestrians seriously injured after car park crash

Two pedestrians were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a vehicle collided with them near a car park.

The man and woman, both in their 20s, were walking in Swan Street, Northampton, on Friday afternoon when a black Seat Leon struck them.

St John's car park was closed and people unable to retrieve their vehicles after the car then crashed into its entrance.

Northamptonshire Police said a 23-year-old man from the town was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to custody.

The force referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after the collision as officers were in attendance when it happened just after 15:30 BST.

An assessment of the car park's structure took place on Friday and it was later deemed safe to reopen.

Police said officers wanted to hear from anyone who had dashcam footage of the incident.
