People with diabetes in Cornwall have been urged to sign up to a new free programme which offers support.

It provides guidance for people who have been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as well as those who already live with the condition.

The programme offers face to face and virtual sessions with local GP practices and refresher courses for people who need ongoing support to manage their diabetes.

Dr Chris Reid, chief medical officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board said his team "really want to help people with diabetes take healthy steps to reduce their risk of developing a number of serious health problems".

Complications from diabetes can include vision loss, heart disease and stroke, loss of feeling and pain and foot problems such as sores and infections, which could lead to amputation if not treated.

Heather Taylor, senior educator for the programme, which is called Diabetes and You, said: “We understand the challenges people face when living with type 2 diabetes.

"We’re encouraging these patients to start taking ownership of their diabetes, it’s a two-way journey, two-way conversation and two-way decision making on any changes to their management.”
