A bridge has been closed after a combine harvester struck it causing structural damage.

Northamptonshire Police confirmed the vehicle struck the Grade II listed Ditchford Bridge in Rushden, Northamptonshire, after suffering a tyre blowout.

The crossing is now closed indefinitely for safety reasons as there is an exposed drop to the embankment and river below.

North Northamptonshire Council said: "A fully signed diversion will be in place as soon as possible. We are asking drivers to allow enough time for journeys."

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.20am on Wednesday, August 14, by a combine driver who reported striking the bridge and causing damage to the brickwork due to a blowout.

"After liaising with North Northamptonshire Council’s street doctor team, they took over ownership of the incident."

As the bridge is a 'scheduled monument' consent has to be agreed with Historic England, external before any repairs take place.

It said it will work with the council on a plan "to urgently remedy the damage to make the structure safe".
