Boston Borough Council is switching on its Christmas lights on the first night of a three-day festival

A town once mocked for its "dismal" Christmas lights has promised this year's event will be "magical".

Boston Borough Council said it was expecting thousands to attend its three-day festival, which starts later with the illuminations being switched on at 18:45 GMT in Market Place.

In previous years the council faced criticism over its lack of festive lights and a £20,000 artificial tree.

Councillor Dale Broughton said: "The Boston Christmas Festival has become a beloved tradition in our community, bringing joy and festive spirit to residents and visitors alike."

The authority's festive efforts have previously been criticised including the installation of an artificial tree in 2022

He added: "After the tremendous success of last year's event, I'm thrilled to see it return for another magical weekend of holiday cheer."

The authority said about 7,000 people attended the switch on event last year, which was "the highest in footfall we have seen in many years visually" and expected this number to increase.

As part of the festivities, there will also be an ice rink for the first time this year.
