Locals fear the white bubbles may have been caused by chemicals in the River Tame

Motorists were stunned to see "huge white bubbles" floating down the road, residents said.

The Environment Agency (EA) confirmed it was investigating why bubbles had emerged from the nearby River Tame in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester, on Monday morning.

"The road was chaos with people stopping to look or having to slow down to drive through it," added local resident Sam Pedder.

"People were picking their dogs up and carrying them past it."

Mr Pedder said he was concerned because "it seems like some chemicals of some sort".

He said: "It's sad to see because you don't know the effect it is having on the fish, birds and wildlife around the area or even people letting their dogs swim further down the river."

An EA spokesperson said: "We would like to thank members of the public who reported the presence of foam in Dukinfield around the River Tame in Tameside.

"Officers are currently out on site investigating the source and if there are any possible environmental impacts."
