Drivers leaving south-west England were caught in more than two hours of queues caused by emergency repairs to a bridge.

Two lanes of the M5 northbound were closed after a faulty bridge join was discovered on the Avonmouth Bridge, near junction 18, at about 07:00 BST.

Queues stretched 14 miles (22km) back to junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare.

A National Highways spokesperson said the lanes were expected to remain closed until at least 21:00.

Two images side by side. The left shows a section of tarmac which looks to be freshly laid, however half of it has been scraped away to reveal an orange surface underneath. A large piece of yellow highways machinery with a diagonal belt instead of a wheel can be seen in the background. The right image shows a larger section of the same carriageway, with cones separating the three closed lanes from one lane of flowing traffic.Image source, National Highways

A temporary fix was initially carried out but it soon became clear a permanent solution was "quickly needed", the spokesperson said.

They explained the warm weather was affecting the speed at which the repairs could be carried out, with materials used to fix the issue taking longer to cure.

All lanes re-opened at about 22:00.
