Historic and classic vehicles will be making their way to a Devon castle over the weekend.

The Crash Box and Classic Car Club of Devon has organised its annual Historic Vehicle Gathering rally at Powderham Castle near Exeter on Saturday and Sunday.

Organisers said about 1,500 vehicles including cars, steam engines and military vehicles covering more than 100 years of motoring, would be heading to the show.

Doors will be open at the rally, which has been an annual event since 1975, from 10:00 to 16:30 BST on both days.

Along with the vehicles, organisers said a special display to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day this year would also be taking place.

The event will be raising money for the Royal Devon Hospitals Charity, Veterans with Dogs and Teignmouth Shopmobility.

Mike Overfield-Collins, the rally's chairman, said the vehicles on show included a Bentley from 1923 and sports cars from the 1980s.

"There's a lot of camaraderie in the old car movement generally and people sort of relate to the cars that they wished they had when they were children," Mr Overfield-Collins said.

"I think that's why you see a lot of interest in cars like the cars from the 1970s and 80s."

Mr Overfield-Collins said the way older cars looked compared to modern vehicles also added to their appeal.

He said: "All the old cars look so much different and they all had character.

"Going on the road, you could immediately recognise whether it was a Triumph Stag or one of the early Ford Granadas.

"They all had totally different styles to them and it was before the computer design ages came in so people actually used their own artistic ideas."
