Nene Valley Railway is on Peterborough's heritage assets list

A city council has expanded its list of heritage sites with 382 new entries, including buildings and parks.

Peterborough was among 21 local authorities to receive government and Historic England funding through a pilot scheme aimed at expanding local heritage asset lists.

The city's list now includes more than 700 assets, such as St Mark's Church in Lincoln Road, the Faizan-e-Madina Mosque and the New Theatre.

The additions ensure that every ward and parish — except Hampton Vale— has at least one recognised heritage asset.

Council officers said each site contributed to the "district's character and sense of place" and once lost "cannot be replaced."

Inclusion on the list does not give the sites extra legal protection from development, but any proposed alterations should be sympathetic to its character and significance.

The city council's planning and environmental protection committee will formally note the adoption of the new assets at its meeting, external on Tuesday, and property owners are being notified of their inclusion on the list.
