Repairs will be carried out to fix a leak which has been coming through the surface of a road in Nottingham for more than a week.

Residents said the leak, which has left water flowing down Carlton Hill in Carlton, was first spotted at the beginning of last week.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said repairs had been delayed due to the location of a nearby gas pipe.

They added: "This makes the repair more complex, and we needed additional planning time to start repairs safely."

"We are planning to be able to begin repairs in the next 24 hours, and we will be doing this work out of hours to reduce any disruption," the spokesperson continued.

"Customers can be assured it's always our absolute priority to fix the pipe as quickly and safely as possible and we're thankful for their patience."

Nottinghamshire County Council said work was expected to be completed by Thursday.

Residents told the BBC earlier this week the leak had been ongoing for days and that Severn Trent officials had been seen in the area taking photographs, but no work had been carried out.

Retired teacher Ian Willsdon said the leak had been going on for at least a week-and-a-half.

The 73-year-old said on Tuesday the leak was "bubbling up a couple of inches above the ground and running down through the traffic lights".

He said: "We're in this severe drought, and I'm doing things like saving the washing up water to put on the garden, so I'm not using the hose and that's been pouring out for days and days and days - and not only that, I'm a Severn Trent water customer."
